I love the idea of solo travelling. For a few months now, I’ve known that I’d give it a try, but I never knew when. I just knew it’d be one day…
My birthday is coming up… okay it’s in four months, but those four months will flyyy by. With my love of travelling, it’s no surprise at all that I’m considering spending my birthday in another country.
I love group holidays, but trying to please everyone can be really stressful, especially when you are the organiser. I have different friendship groups and their personalities are sooo different from one another that I worry that they won’t get along or that’ll want to do completely different things. Trying to find that balance where everyone is happy is hard, if not impossible.
While considering all the issues that a group holiday can cause, a thought occurred to me. Why don’t I solo travel for my birthday?
Some may believe that solo travelling will be a bit of a lonely experience, but I’m not so sure about that. I’ve always been quite comfortable in my own company, I guess it’s the introvert in me ?. I love the idea of that by solo travelling I can become even more comfortable in myself and learn to truly love me for me. I also think a few days to myself would be good time to think. I feel like I am at a crossroads in my life in which I need to make quite a few important decisions.
At this point in time, I’m not sure if I will solo travel on my birthday, but it is something I will definitely be considering. Knowing me, I’ll probably change my mind a million times before I come to a final decision lol.
I would love to hear your views, so let me know in the comments. Is it crazy to spend my birthday by myself in a country I’ve never been to before? If you’ve solo travelled before let me know what your experience was like. All advice is welcome and very much appreciated! ?
I say go for it! I’ve been solo travelling for a while now and I’ve never looked back.
I wrote a blog post a couple of days ago about why you should do it over on jazzontheroad.wordpress.com
I find it so much less stressful because all you have to worry about is yourself. Perfect birthday present. ?
Thanks for the advice, I’m definitely going to check out your blog post! x
As a dedicated solo traveler, I’d vote for going it alone! Happy birthday in advance too 🙂
Awww thank you! 🙂
Where are you thinking about going? Personally, I just spent some time in Chicago, IL. I was only alone one night but it was perfect. It’s so nice to travel solo for the reasons you’ve described but I tend to miss having someone to share it with… I’ve also recently been blessed with my fiance and perfect travel buddy. If you don’t have one person that you can really enjoy it with, I’d definitely go it alone! It’s never fun to feel like you have to entertain other people and it’s ruined some of my travel experiences.
Thanks for the advice! I’m planning to go to Budapest. After thinking about this for some while, I don’t think I’ll solo travel for my first time on my birthday. I’ve never spent my birthday alone and although organising a group holiday can be stressful, it can also be more than worth all the effort put in. However, I definitely will be solo travelling in the near future. I honestly can’t wait to experience it! 🙂
Sounds like a great plan for an amazing place!
I saw go for it…I have traveled Solo in Nigeria, the UAE and Italy …Asides from Italy where I had language barrier, I was good at other locations.
Thanks for reading my post and commenting! Wow that’s so cool. I’ve actually decided not to solo travel for the first on my birthday, but I do plan to solo travel very soon in the near future. 🙂
Definitely go for it!! I love travelling solo, and it’s not a lonely experience – in fact I’ve made more friends this way than any other 🙂
Thanks! It’s great having received so much encouragement to give solo travelling a try. I definitely will be solo travelling in the very near future, but I’ve decided not to for my birthday. 🙂
Just had a look at your blog and it looks amazing! Can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for us for your launch next month! 🙂
I spent my 21st birthday abroad – not alone, but with a handful of people I’d only known a week or so. Honestly? It was quite lonely, but still a great experience! To be honest, I wouldn’t recommend it if it would be your first time travelling solo so maybe it’s a good thing you’ve decided not to 🙂
Yeah I agree, birthdays should be spent with your loved ones. I’m comfortable with my own company, but I know if I was to spend my birthday alone I would feel lonely. So I guess I’ll just have to leave solo travelling to another time! Where did you go on your 21st?
Last year was my big 30 and I decided to treat myself to a holiday in California (by myself) and I can honestly say it was one of the best trips I’ve ever had and this year I went to Vienna for my birthday so I may be making a little tradition of it! I would say do it, you will be somewhere amazing for your special day and as long as you can find some good cake to celebrate all will be well!! Good luck:)
Ohhh wow, that’s amazing! Thank you for sharing your experience and for the encouragement. Solo travelling on my birthday is something I will definitely have to consider doing one year! 🙂
